Every superhero has an origin story, and the superhero staff and interns at Monk Gardens are no different!

Read on to learn what were the influences and experiences that made our Volunteer Coordinator/Administrative Assistant, Megan Johnson, pursue a career in a nature-based field!

I was fortunate to explore many aspects of the outdoors ranging from my own backyard in Metro Detroit to national, state, and local parks. My parents made a point to get us outside, and summers were abundant with camping and hiking both near and far from home. I still remember the countless hours spent catching frogs with my friend in the ditch behind her house, and the evenings when I ran around chasing fireflies that filled the night sky. I gained an appreciation for the flora and fauna of landscapes of all kinds. Along with an appreciation for the diversity and wonder of nature, my parents also fostered environmental awareness and care for the planet. They set examples through recycling, reusable products, and more earth-friendly options, when possible. I was taught concepts of sustainability before I even learned it as a term.

I hope through the work I do that people feel valued, and that I can improve our community and the well-being of the people that live here. I care about people. And I care about the environment. Luckily, Monk Botanical Gardens also cares about both.”
